Monroeville - Courthouse

  • This is the 1903 courthouse pictured in the early 1920s. It was literally open to the public. No doors were originally installed. All the judges and lawyers had offices in this building.

The courtroom was used as a model for the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird." The jury sat on the left of the judge's bench.

The old courtroom was heated by a coal-burning stove and cooled in the hot summer with funeral-home fans. These fans are hand-held fans with a wooden handle on a piece of cardboard imprinted with the name of a funeral home or other business.
