Biography of David Nicholls

  • Author Born in 1966, I grew up in Eastleigh, on the south coast of England. I studied Drama and English Literature at University of Bristol, then acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, before returning to work as an actor in England, where I played various roles in rep and at the Royal National Theatre.

I began working as a script editor for various TV companies, before co-writing the feature film adaptation of Simpatico, a stage play by Sam Shepard. The final film starred Jeff Bridges, Sharon Stone, Nick Nolte, Albert Finney, and was released in 2000.

I then returned to London and began writing comedy and drama for TV. My credits include I Saw You, starring Fay Ripley and Paul Rhys, half of the third series of Cold Feet, and Rescue Me, starring Sally Phillips, for the BBC. Most recently, I wrote an updated version of Shakespear's Much Ado About Nothing for the BBC.

I have written a novel, Starter For Ten, a comedy about class, growing-up, unrequited love and general knowledge. I also wrote the film adaptation for Playtone, Tom Hanks' production company, as well as a second novel, The Understudy.
