Recession of Griesgletscher: Whereas the glacier snout still terminated in the newly dammed Griessee in 1973, by 2004 it had receded so far that a forefield several hundred metres in length had appeared between the lake and the glacier snout. Although the photos were take under very different lighting conditions and not from exactly the same loction, a useful comparison is still possible. Note also the diminishing ice cover at the lower north face of Bättelmatthorns on the far right.
