Aerial photos around 1981
Before Triftgletscher's catastrophic recession it had probably the best developed ogives of all the glaciers in the Swiss Alps.
View towards the north; with Gadmertal in the background. Note the rock is bare of almost all vegetation to the north of the glacier tongue and the riegel right in front. This shows the extent of the glacier during the Little Ice Age.
Enlarged section from the previous photo. Note the small ridge-like lateral moraine on the glacier's right margin which was caused by a small advance some years previouslyy.
View towards the south. Many of the other photos in this section were taken from the riegel which dams the glacier tongue in the lower part of the image.
