Earth’s glacial record

The long-term glacial record, spanning some 35 million years, has been obtained by drilling in the deep ocean from research vessels, or on the continental shelf by rigs designed for drilling on land, but placed on the winter sea ice. Here the seven-nation Cape Roberts Project is drilling into the sea ice from sea ice in the western Ross Sea. Over a kilometre of core was obtained over three seasons. (Photo Peter Barrett).
