Several steep mountain glaciers in the east flank of Piz Bernina (4049m.a.s.l.), in the background, became much smaller. Note also the retreat of the mountain glacier on Isla Persa, below left centre of the image and the appearance of a large new rock outcrop in the upper part of the same glacier. In general the snowline in 2003 is much higher at the end of summer, compared with 1978 (photos Joachim Wolff).
