Below the icefall [1], roughly in the middle of Vadret da Morteratsch, 2500 m.a.s.l.: Variegated structure in the ice, so-called foliation [2], is oriented perpendicular to the direction of the glacier's flow. Towards the glacier's margin, the foliation turns uphill. The bending is a result of higher ice velocities in the middle of the glacier. Foliation here forms as a result of closing of crevasses below the icefall [1] and due to various types of ice. The brighter ice melts less easily than the darker one, thus leading to the rough texture of the glaciers' surface around our location.
