Morteratsch QTVR panoramas

Northeast of «Fortezza», 3150 m.a.s.l.: Crevasses open up when ice flow is irregular. In the icefall [1], the steepest part of Vadret da Morteratsch (locally called the «Labyrinth»), the ice accelerates to velocities of up to about 1 metre per day! Extension in the longitudinal direction leads to numerous transverse crevasses [2]. Other crevasses are formed due to friction on the rocky sides [3] along the glacier margin. Crevasses are particularly dangerous to mountaineers if covered by snow. These, for example [4], probably continue under the snow towards the upper right.
