All movies were taken on 1. November 1999 (unless otherwise noted) during a quick visit to Etna. Times are plus/minus 30mins and are local. Recordings were made with a digital video camera. 16h00: Bocca Nuova (BN) from SW; detonations are followed by massive ash emission. White smoke in the lower left corner marks the exit of the BN lava flow.

1.11.99, 22h00: All afternoon and until now the SEC hornito drains towards the East. Pulsed degassing causes remarkable waves on the flow's surface. Also note «cool» (black) piece of lava riding the flow.

22h30: Suddenly the hornito breaks open on its western side, and from now on all lava drains this way. Spattering is moderate at first, but becomes stronger and stronger as time goes by.

22h40: Spectacular spattering from the SEC hornito. Despite the new opening, a roof-like structure remains intact and creates the illusion of a «grotta» from which the lava exits.
Pastoral surprise (0.5 MB) 3. November 1999; note Etna smoking in the background.
