On the East rim of Nyiragongo's crater, where the Observatoire Volcanologique de Goma maintains a weather station powered by solar cells. On the right of the crater rim, Virunga volcanoes Mikeno (4432m.a.s.l.) and Karisimbi (4506m.a.s.l.) at the horizon.
On the North rim of Nyiragongo's crater. On the right of the rim, Nyamuragira shield volcano, Nyiragongo's North flank cone Baruta, the smaller flank cone Nyamushw and just above it, at the horizon, Virunga volcanoes Mikeno (left) and Karisimbi (right).
On the West rim of Nyiragongo's crater, about 200m north of the Bastion. On the left of the crater, Nymuragira shield volcano at the horizon. Small bushes colonize the rim when the lava lake is frozen and die when it is active due to the emission of sulfur dioxide.
The campsite on the south rim of Nyiragongo is on an terrace excavated a few meters below the rim in the seventies. The lava lake is hidden by the usual thick smoke. On the right of the rim, Karisimbi volcano (4506m.a.s.l.), the South flank cone Shaheru with the 2002 eruptive fissure, and just above it Goma on Lake Kivu at the horizon.
