The campsite on the south rim of Nyiragongo is on an terrace excavated a few meters below the rim in the seventies. The lava lake is hidden by the usual thick smoke. On the right of the rim, Karisimbi volcano (4506m.a.s.l.), the South flank cone Shaheru with the 2002 eruptive fissure, and just above it Goma on Lake Kivu at the horizon. |
