Reaching an altitude of «only» 1281 meters above sea level, Vesuvius does not receive a lasting snow cover every winter. Nevertheless snow is not an entirely exceptional sight for the residents of the towns along the volcano's base.

In January and February 2003 Southern Italy received an unusual amount of precipitation during cold temperatures. These photos were taken during a return journey to Stromboli and Vulcano on 11.2.2003. Since the train window was very dirty strong image processing had to be applied.
