Old Faithful Indicator (OFI) is a useful feature which helps you find out when the next eruption is due. In fact eruption predictions get posted by the park rangers. However, OFI may be more fun to use. It works as follows: The more people are crowded in the viewing area, the sooner is the next eruption. After an eruption, most people walk away. So if you get to Old Faithful and nobody is there, you are in for a long wait (at least 35, at most 120 minutes). OFI needs occasional calibration to allow for the effects of cold or rainy weather (fewer viewers during all phases of the eruptive cycle) or time of day (more viewers in the evening than early morning). You will get the hang of it. Careful adaption to the sometimes much longer cycles is necassary when adapting OFI to other geysers. |
