Seismic measurements

Stromboli seismic activity day by day 2003

A seismic station close to the craters records continuously (in collaboration with R. Ortiz, CSIC Madrid - Spain) the seismic activity during this peculiar eruptive phase. This page shows you, day by day, the activity as we record it. The graphs are generated automatically when we receive the data in Udine. We cannot therefore guarantee any continuity nor any deadline in the data publication. We do not guarantee its correctness nor we give any interpretation, e.g. in terms of hazard. For these aspects we direct you to the official guidelines of Civil Defense and of the INGV, that publishes almost every day a report on the current volcanic activity. The graphs are presented using GMT time, in PNG format. If your browser does not support this format, there are many freeware utilities you can install to see it.

Note: due to damage suffered by our seismic station on 5. April 2003, not all the graphs are directly comparable in amplitude! The explosion severely damaged our seismic station. In particular, solar panels are destroyed. Some data was collected afterwards as long as a battery was able to provide enough power. But on 16 April the summit station stopped working completely.

Meanwhile we have installed a temporary station at San Bartolo village (thanks to Sergio Ballarò). Obviously the data are much more affected by noise, both generated by the sea and by human activities. For the latter, we present here only data recorded during night hours, and we recommend to treat these with greater care. We hope they are useful to you anyway to keep an eye on the ongoing seismic activity at Stromboli volcano.

classical events or explosion-quakes. These are the signals usually associated to the strombolian activity. However, during this period, normally the pyroclastic material does not manage to reach the surface. That's why you do not see any explosion when observing from the Pizzo.

rockfall. Moderate-sized landslide events along the slope of Sciara del Fuoco. They have a duration much longer than explosion-quakes, tipically of the order of minutes, and an elongated shape.
