Following the collapse of Mount Mazama, the only volcanic activity was within the newly formed caldera. Several lava domes formed but did not rise above the lake surface. The only cone which rose high enough to be visible today is Wizard island. Its cinder cone rises 233 meters above the lake and is topped by a small crater, 90 meters across and 27 meters deep. The hummocky part of the island pointed towards us as well as the flatish extensions on the left and on the right are block lava flows which all were all emplaced before the caldera was filled with water. Mount Scott is on the top left, Kerr Notch exactly above the summit of Wizard Island. |
