Peyton Farquhar: A wealthy Southern planter and Confederate supporter, Farquhar is the protagonist. He is so central to the story that, for much of the narrative, he is almost the only character who receives significant attention. Most of the other characters don't even have names. He is a romantic idealist who attempts to sabotage the Union-controlled Owl Creek Bridge but is tricked by a Union scout and subsequently hanged. Much of the story revolves around his imagined escape during his final moments.

Mrs. Farquhar: Peyton’s wife, who appears briefly in the story. She is portrayed as a devoted and idealized figure in Peyton’s imagination, representing his desire for home, comfort, and family.

Supporting Characters

Union Scout: Disguised as a Confederate soldier, this spy tricks Farquhar into attempting to destroy the bridge, which leads to Farquhar’s capture and execution. The scout symbolizes the harsh realities of war and deception.
