Lord of the Flies, 1954 - Kid Nation, 2007

  • 'Kid Nation' is a CBS reality show, based on "Lord of the Flies."
It premiered on the CBS network on September 19, 2007 and was officially canceled on May 14, 2008.
The show features 40 children, aged 8-15. Rather than surviving on an island, the kids live in Bonanza City, N.M., a ghost town abandoned more than a century ago. The children live without parental supervision and modern comforts. They cook their own meals, haul their own water, clean their own outhouses and even run businesses. Four peer leaders are elected who pass laws and set bedtimes. The goal for the kids is to build a functional society. They have to pass laws, choose leaders and build an economy.
Discuss the implications such a show can have on the kids and young viewers.
