Steinbeck, John: 1902-1968

- In 1903 John Ernst Steinbeck, Sr. built the small three-room summer Steinbeck Family Cottage (15, see Map below) made of wood painted reddish brown. Located at 147 Eleventh Street, this house was used by the Steinbeck family as a summer vacation home. Steinbeck lived in this cottage from 1930-36 with his first wife, Carol, as he struggled to become a successful writer. He returned to the house to live at various times in the 1940s.
