George VI Ice Shelf tributary glaciers

The ice shelf is fed primarily by big ice streams flowing from the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet on Palmer Land. These spectacular features flow between jagged "alpine" peaks, and are heavily crevassed. Alexander Island also has large outlet glaciers, but these are less active and have few crevasses; they contribute little to the area of the ice shelf.

Wavy transverse crevasses are developed in Riley Glacier as it approaches George VI Ice Shelf.

Northern margin of a large valley glacier, the Jupiter, flowing from Alexander Island into George VI Ice Shelf. “Pressure ridges” are formed where the glacier impinges on the ice shelf.

Ice-draped peaks feeding Eros Glacier which also flows off Alexander Island into George VI Ice Shelf. The generally smooth surface is interrupted by a belt of crevasses as the glacier flows over a bedrock irregularity.

Small alpine glaciers and large outlet glacier on Alexander Island north of Fossil Bluff. The ice shelf is forced away from the island at this point. Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks form the prominent cliff.
