Migrating boulders project

Oberaargletscher time-lapse movies

A simple automatic camera (typically used for wildlife monitoring) was installed on the tongue of Oberaargletscher. The camera was facing downglacier, towards the ENE (cf. still image at the bottom of this page). Boulders can be seen forming glacier tables, slipping off their ice pedestals usually towards the right (south) and, therefore, gradually migrating towards the righthand side of the frame.

First movie: 29. July 2021 to 1. October 2021 (a particularly large boulder invades the view after the first third of the movie).

Second movie: 10. July 2023 to 19. Septe,ber 2023

Photos were recorded in roughly one hour intervals except for the darkest part of the night. Images were then assembled into a time-lapse movie. The camera was mounted on a tripod with its legs spread very wide. This arrangement allowed the camera-tripod-combination to follow surface lowering due to ablation without major changes in the orientation of the camera.

The automatic camera was kindly provided by Peter Koch, Rafz.
