Etna Paroxysm 23 February 2013

In the evening of 23 February 2013, Etna's new South-East Cone underwent its 5th paroxysm of a sequence which had started four days earlier. Within this period of increased activity it has been by far the most violent so far. Strong wind from the south carried cm-sized lapilli as far north as the city of Messina. This is a distance of about 50 kilometres! Pizzi Deneri, 3 kilometres north of the vent, became incandescent from massive amounts of volcanic fallout, making the view spectacular and unforgettable. Marco recorded the eruption from Monte Zoccolaro, about 8 kilometres east of the vent. All videos were filmed with a Nikon D7000 camera and a 135mm lens. The full-HD movies were compressed to MP4 files. Scroll down to see all eight clips.
