The Island and the Volcano 1996

To view the images you need to wear red-blue glasses (red-green ones will work fine too). The red window of the glasses must be on the left!

Sciara del Fuoco from West

Sciara del Fuoco on the left, top right: Frontone (853m). Notice the dykes in the center of the picture (vertical slabs of intruded lava, exposed by differntial weathering).

Sciara del Fuoco from North

The black lava flow from the craters towards the camera is from 1985/86. The route to the summit follows the ridge on the left.

Liscione from Stromboli village

The highest point on the horizon is not Pizzo (that is further back). On the left, along the ridge called 'Liscione' the stratification of lava and pyroclastics can clearly be seen.

Rina Grande

Top left: Vancori summit (924m, highest point on the island) top right: Liscione ridge. From the col between these two points (Le Croci) the ash slope called 'Rina Grande' descends towards the bottom right (compare next photo).

Le Croci, Rina Grande

This photo was taken from the path which leads up to the Vancori from the Northeast. In the left background is the Liscione ridge, Pizzo is on the left outside the picture. Note behind and on the left of the village (San Vincenzo) the old volcanic neck 'Strombolicchio'.

Punta Lena

Southernmost part of the island: The small plain in the foreground and the slopes above it were settled and cultivated in the past. Geologically this is one of the oldest parts of Stromboli. Therefore some fairly deep erosional trenches have developped. Particularly deep is 'i Cavoni', in the center of this view.

Cerro Monaco is in the middle of this photo, above it are the Vancori.
